Vitrines was a piece installed in the corridor windows of the FoFA Gallery of Concordia University. It mapped out the possible routes of decay and invasion by moisture and moss, if the building fell into neglect, and the windows broken and rain let in. Would we then seek refuge and nap on damp and mossy pools, as do the main characters in Tarkovsky's Stalker? Would we become trapped in the corridors, driven by phantasies of our own redemption?
What was intended as a presentation of a possible derelict future became instead a performance, as the moss needed daily re-hydration. It was a fortunate accident, because I could then invite others in to experience the richer air, and smell of an alive space preserved behind the glass.
